Motus False Inactive: Active Insurance Still Isn't Enough

Motus is still marking carriers inactive while their insurance is already on file — and brokers treat that flag as gospel. CDLLife (Sep 22–23, 2026) tracked Savoy Transportation of Houston through almost two months of rejected loads before FMCSA flipped them back to active hours after news coverage. Overdrive (updated Sep 24) cited CAB data showing more than 1,200 carriers with active insurance matching the minimum still under involuntary suspension. For CEOs, this is not an IT footnote. It is a tender and coverage-file emergency.

What happened to Savoy — and why it matters beyond one truck

CDLLife (Sep 22, 2026) reported that Savoy Transportation of Houston was marked inactive during the Motus transition even though its insurance and other paperwork were in order. The company found out the hard way: brokers started rejecting loads. FMCSA told them it was a computer glitch — a "known issue" — and that the agency was working on it. Accountant Lisa Hall said she contacted FMCSA more than 20 times. Over three weeks they lost at least 15–20 loads.

CDLLife followed up Sep 23: after almost two months off the road, Savoy flipped back to active within hours of the story hitting the news. One truck, one driver, back in business — but only after public pressure, not a clean help-desk path.

That is the CEO lesson. Authority status is now a live operational risk tied to how Motus reads your insurance filing, not only whether you paid the premium.

The scale: 1,200+ carriers with insurance on file still suspended

Overdrive (Todd Dills), updated Sep 24, 2026, cited CAB analysis: more than 1,200 carriers had an active insurance filing that matched their minimum requirement and still sat under an "involuntary suspension" for insurance reasons. In the Jeffrey Crise case, Motus showed an active policy and a suspension reason of "No active insurance meeting minimum coverage on file" at the same time.

DPW Inc., a 16-driver dry-van fleet, took about a $23,000 income hit while suspended roughly 40 days — even with valid insurance. Broker portals (Highway, RMIS) mirrored the bad Motus flag, so tenders dried up for anyone who did not already know the carrier personally.

A later Overdrive cleanup piece (updated Sep 16) found only 165 authorities reactivated after involuntary suspension in a six-day CAB batch, most tagged "Administrative correction." Progress is real. It is also case-by-case — too slow when payroll is weekly.

CEO checklist while Motus still glitches

1. Open Motus and SAFER yourself this week — do not wait for a broker to bounce you.

2. Confirm BIPD (and cargo if required) filings match the binder and endorsement dates after every insurer change or renewal.

3. Screenshot declarations, BMC filings, and Motus authority status the day you renew or switch agents.

4. If Highway/RMIS still shows unauthorized after Motus looks clean, escalate with your agent and FMCSA ticket numbers the same day.

5. Keep certificates current on every portal you bid — an expired COI plus a Motus glitch is a double "do not tender."

6. Related: FMCSA paused biennial-update enforcement for due dates on/after June 1, 2026 while Motus stabilizes — that pause does not fix false insurance suspensions. See our Motus biennial guide: https://www.supremetruckinginsurance.com/blog/fmcsa-biennial-update-motus-pause-what-truckers-need
